Xiaomi Hotspot Works But Devices Have No Internet
If your Xiaomi hotspot connects (laptop/tablet shows WiFi bars) but connected devices have no internet, first check Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot → Data limit → Set to "No limit". Then turn off Battery saver in Settings → Battery → Battery saver → OFF. If still not working, toggle Airplane mode on/off for 30 seconds.
Applies to Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi Phones
This guide applies to Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices running MIUI or HyperOS, including models such as Redmi Note series, POCO X series, POCO F series and Xiaomi flagship devices (Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 15, etc.).
Before Anything Else
Open Chrome on your Xiaomi and check whether mobile data works directly on the phone.
- If mobile data does not work on the Xiaomi itself: Fix the mobile data problem first. Hotspot cannot work without mobile data.
- If mobile data works on the Xiaomi but connected devices have no internet: Continue with the hotspot fixes below.
Quick Fixes – Try These First
- Check hotspot data limit – Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot → Data limit → Set to "No limit".
- Turn off Battery saver – Settings → Battery → Battery saver → OFF.
- Toggle Airplane mode – ON for 30 seconds, then OFF.
- Switch hotspot band to 2.4GHz – Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot → Set up Wi-Fi hotspot → AP Band → 2.4GHz.
- Reset network settings – Settings → Connection & sharing → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and Bluetooth. (Last resort)
What Usually Causes This
- Hotspot data limit configured – Some Xiaomi devices include a hotspot data limit. If the limit has been reached, connected devices may lose internet access. Set it to "No limit".
- Battery saver may restrict hotspot – On some Xiaomi devices, Battery saver can affect hotspot behaviour. Try turning it off.
- 5GHz compatibility issues – Some older devices may have compatibility issues with 5GHz hotspots, causing connection failures or unstable internet access. Switch to 2.4GHz.
- APN configuration (less common) – Some UK carriers require specific APN settings for tethering. This is less common and not needed for most users.
Fix 1 – Check Hotspot Data Limit
Some Xiaomi devices include a hotspot data limit that you might not know about. This is worth checking.
Step 1 – Go to hotspot settings: Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot
Step 2 – Check Data limit: Tap "Data limit" → Set to "No limit" or increase the value.
Step 3 – Restart hotspot – Turn hotspot off, then on again.
Fix 2 – Turn Off Battery Saver
On some Xiaomi devices, Battery saver may restrict hotspot behaviour to save power.
Step 1 – Turn off Battery saver: Settings → Battery → Battery saver → OFF
Step 2 – Remove hotspot restriction (if available): Settings → Apps → Manage apps → Search for "Personal hotspot" → Battery saver → Set to "No restrictions"
Step 3 – Restart your phone and test hotspot again.
Fix 3 – Toggle Airplane Mode
This forces your phone to restart the mobile data connection, which can fix temporary glitches.
Step 1 – Enable Airplane mode (swipe down notification shade)
Step 2 – Wait 30 seconds
Step 3 – Disable Airplane mode
Step 4 – Wait 60 seconds then turn hotspot back on and test.
Fix 4 – Switch Hotspot Band to 2.4GHz
Some older devices may have compatibility issues with 5GHz hotspots, causing connection failures or unstable internet access.
Step 1 – Go to hotspot settings: Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot → Set up Wi-Fi hotspot
Step 2 – Change AP Band: Select "2.4GHz" (not "5GHz" or "Auto")
Step 3 – Save and restart hotspot
Fix 5 – Add "dun" to APN Type (For Some Carriers)
In some cases, adding "dun" (Dial Up Networking) to the APN type may help if your carrier requires explicit tethering support.
Step 1 – Go to APN settings: Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → [Your carrier] SIM → Access Point Names
Step 2 – Tap your active APN (the one with a dot next to it)
Step 3 – Find "APN type" – It will say something like "default, supl" or "default, supl, mms"
Step 4 – Add ",dun" to the end – For example, change "default, supl" to "default, supl, dun"
Step 5 – Save and restart your phone
If it doesn't help, remove the ",dun" – it won't harm your phone.
Fix 6 – Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)
Path: Settings → Connection & sharing → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and Bluetooth
Only do this if Fixes 1-5 didn't work.
Test Your SIM in Another Phone
This tells you whether the problem is your Xiaomi or your carrier.
- If hotspot works on another phone: The problem is your Xiaomi. Reset network settings (Fix 6).
- If hotspot fails on another phone too: Your carrier may be blocking tethering. Contact them to check your plan.
Quick Questions
Why do devices connect to my hotspot but have no internet?
Several issues can cause this, including mobile data problems, hotspot configuration, carrier restrictions, or temporary software glitches. Try Fixes 1-3 in order.
What does adding "dun" to APN do?
"dun" stands for Dial Up Networking. Some carriers need this to recognise hotspot/tethering. It's not needed for most UK users.
Will resetting network settings delete my photos?
No. Only saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth devices are removed.
Why does hotspot not work on 5GHz?
Some older devices may have compatibility issues with 5GHz hotspots. Switch your hotspot to 2.4GHz in settings.
